Connected manufacturing - The 5G Bavaria testbed for Industry 4.0 + Live view into an OPEN RAN campus network
Due to the great demand, the fifth 5G dialog is already taking place. This time in English. We will take you live to the 5G Bavaria Testbed Industry 4.0. The 5G Testbed at Fraunhofer IIS is an open test environment in which customer-specific application scenarios can be evaluated under realistic conditions. You will get to know more about 5G technologies, their possible applications and how 5G can significantly increase the performance of wireless communication and positioning in industrial and logistic environments. As a Highlight, we will take you directly into the infrastructure (Core and RAN) of the OPEN RAN 5G SA campus network.

15.20h Let’s get 5G started – 5G Bavaria Initiative and The 5G Bavaria Testbed Industry 4.0
Thomas von der Grün (IIS) and Bernhard Niemann (IIS)
The “5G Bavaria” initiative of Fraunhofer IIS accompanies the transition from research and standardization to application. It offers companies the opportunity to evaluate new functionalities in a real mobile network environment. In this way, companies and users from vertical markets can experience and use 5G and they can test and further develop their 5G-related applications and developments at an early stage.
The 5G Bavaria Testbed Industry 4.0 offers many possibilities to prepare for the industrial use of 5G. You can test newly standardized 5G features even before the nationwide 5G availability and perform benchmark tests to determine the most appropriate technology for a specific use case. Furthermore, you are gaining experience in running your own campus network.
15.35h Testbed in practice – Live view into the infrastructure of the OPEN RAN-based 5G SA campus network
Ralph Dümmler (IIS)
In the live broadcast, we show you the infrastructure and technical features of the testbed. It extends over two locations. The testbed has an outdoor and an indoor area of 22.000 sqm. Up to 50 radio units are available. The Indoor area will have eight panel / MIMO antennas (at different heights), two mMIMO antennas for FR1 and six mMIMO antennas for FR2. The Outside area will provide four panel / MIMO antennas for FR1. The multi-story Office building is also equipped with 5G small cells infrastructure (20 omni / panel antennas for FR1) on two floors. Our RAN is designed according to the standards of the O-RAN Alliance. You will also see the 5G Core - the heart and brain of our 5G testbed Industry 4.0
